This induction will give you the basic information you need to start using the gym, however if you require a more in-depth induction our gym staff can provide this for you. you can book this online or speak to a member of staff.
There are lockers in the changing rooms that are activated with your personal locker band which you should receive either when you purchase your membership or on your first visit to the gym. Please keep all of your belongings in the locker.
No rucksacks or gym bags are permitted in the gym, however small drawstring bags are acceptable. There are two entrances to the gym, both on the first floor. [A floor plan with two blue circles overlaid at each end of the first floor showing where the exits are] There are four fire exits in the gym, two on the main gym floor and two on the lower free weights floor. In the event of emergency staff will give clear guidance to all members in the gym.
There will be a continuous alarm and you will need to leave via the nearest exit. Do not attempt to get changed or retrieve your belongings or re-enter the building until cleared by the staff. You will need your membership card, student card or staff ID card to swipe through the barriers at either entrance to the gym. If you have an off peak membership your card will only permit you access into the gym during off-peak hours. Next to the main entrance is the gym reception [a circle overlaid over the entrance to the gym showing the location of reception] If you have any queries please speak to a member of the gym team.
Access to the gym will be denied without a valid membership or ID card. Reception can issue a replacement card for community members at a cost and for staff and students, replacement cards are issued by the University. The main gym floor contains all of the cardio and resistance machines including treadmills, cross trainers, rowers, static bikes, and much more. This extensive range of equipment offers a wide variety of strength and fitness workouts that can be tailored to your needs. To move between the main gym floor and the free weights floor there are stairs or a lift for physically impaired members. If you are unsure how to operate the lift a member of staff will be able to assist you.
The free weights floor contains all of the benches, dumbbells, squat racks, plate loaded equipment and Olympic lifting platforms with a variety of bars and discs. Please ensure you are familiar and comfortable with the correct posture and form for lifting and choose weights responsibly. Our gym experts will always be around to give advice on improving your technique and developing your workout. The equipment in the gym has interactive screens and it integrated with a My Wellness app. We recommend all members download the app which is compatible with both Apple and Android devices. You will be asked to fill in an aspiration map which will help us create a personal physical activity program for you. It is very important that you are consciously aware of safety in the gym. Good technique and positioning is essential for both training effectively and preventing injury.
The resistance machines have instructions however if you're still unsure how to use it please ask a member of staff. Also do not be offended if a member of staff approaches you to correct a movement or give you advice, we are here to help. Similarly do not over stretch yourself. If you want to increase your workout ask our experts for recommendations. To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable workout for all members please be respectful of their safety and the gym etiquette. You must always bring a towel with you into the gym to wipe sweat off the machines. Cleaning equipment is also provided in the gym.
We ask all members to wear correct training attire for example shorts and t-shirt. Suitable footwear must always be worn, dirty outdoor footwear, flip-flops or bare feet are not acceptable.
